D1 MINIBUS TRAINING

The aim of this course would be to help drivers gain their minibus licence either to add the category to their licence or remove the 101 restriction which will enable them to drive professionally.
As the lead D1 driver trainer at Hampshire County Council, I have over 14 years experience of putting their staff through the D1 driver trainer process. Up to this date I have currently put over 550 people through this training with a first time pass rate of over 94.7%.
The staff who passed their initial driving tests after the 1st of January 1997 had to then go through this process if they were to drive the larger minibuses at the schools or colleges. These vehicles are generally the 17 seat 4.1 ton or 4.6 ton minibuses which are preferred due to their higher weight loading capacity.
The unique part to this course was that we incorporated the MiDAS training into a four day driving course so the candidate would be able to drive straight away when they returned to work.
The law has also changed where you are no longer required to take a D1 test before the D1+E trailer test . You can skip a category which will save you time and money. You can also take your D1 or D1+E test in an automatic vehicle and gain the manual category as long as you took your car test in a manual.
If you require D1 Minibus training you should :
  • Apply for the provisional entitlement using the D2 form which you can get from DVLA forms- GOV.UK(www.gov.uk)
  • Apply for a medical form using the D4 form and attend a medical with your GP or a company that deals with LGV/PCV medicals
  • You then need to pass a PCV theory and hazard perception test at a local theory test centre
  • You will also now have to pass the CPC part 3a which is the reversing part before taking the CPC part 3b practical driving test.
  • If you wish to drive for hire and reward, you will also have to take The Module 2 theory test and a Module 4 practical test before you become a professional driver. This part can be taken before you pass your practical driving test.
  • Minibus and trailer (D1+E) training can be arranged.
The course is normally four days long. The standard of driving must be to a high level but if the candidate has had previous experience then this maybe reduced.
